I was contacted by Jack Collins from the Academicearth.Org about a very interesting video. The video stated some useful points about multiple vaccinations in a short period. Jack Collins has narrated some interesting facts on the website and I am going to link that below. I would also suggest watching the video before reading my post further as this would help in understanding the topic in-depth.
A question lingers in my mind whether too many vaccinations in a short period is the cause of autism? Is Autism a neurodevelopmental disorder or is it caused by too many vaccinations in a short period?
Well, as always I am going to pick my verdicts by taking some relevant research that I have done from PUBMED.
Verdict No: 1
Halsey and Hyman (2001) present some very interesting facts about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the measles-mumps and rubella vaccines (MMR). The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in the year 2000, conducted a conference in Illinois. The main title of the Conference was “New Challenges in Childhood Immunization” (Halsey & Hyman, 2001). At this conference, parents, practitioners, and scientists presented information and research on MMR vaccine and ASD. Many attendees along with the representative of the AAP joined the conference along with parents and practitioners (Halsey & Hyman, 2001).
Results and discussion of the Research and Study:
Autism is a genetic disorder caused by abnormal brain development and malformation. It is being believed that Autism happens to take place on the 30th week of the gestational period (Halsey & Hyman, 2001). It is being concluded that in the uterus Rubella is the main cause of autism. However, here comes the most interesting fact. It was noted that the incidences of Autism showed tremendous increase in United States long after the introduction of MMR in 1970 and 1971. Increased reported of Autism has been noted during this years (1970 & 1971) in children between 12-15 months of age. The other interesting thing that studies have reported is the presence of measles virus in the intestinal specimen of the patient with Autism and gastrointestinal problems (Halsey & Hyman, 2001).
Although the results shows increased in the cause and effect between Autism and MMR vaccines, however, the same study in Europe does not show identical results. Also not much evidence has been reported between children taking individual MMR vaccines and the children having autism secondary to too many vaccinations. The results are still dubious.
Verdict No: 2
Another study was conducted by Green, Stellfeld, Mortenson and Simpson (2003). The main aim of the study was to determine the relationship between the thimerosal containing vaccines and autism. According to Green et al (2003), the high risk of autism and neurodevelopmental disorder was in great concern in the year 1999.
Results and discussion of the Research and Study:
A study was conducted by comparing the prevalence/incidence of Autism by thimerosal containing-vaccines in California, Sweden, Germany and Denmark between the years 1980-late 1990s (Green et al., 2003). The results of the study showed that, the incidence and prevalence of autism-like disorders began to rise in the 1985–1989 period, and the rate of increase accelerated in the early 1990s. However, in contrast to the situation in the United States, where the average Thimerosal dose from vaccines increased throughout the 1990s, Thimerosal exposures from vaccines in both Sweden and Denmark—already low throughout the 1970s and 1980s—began to decrease in the late 1980s and were eliminated in the early 1990s (Green et al., 2003).
The author states that the hypothesis is not consistent with the data obtained from the other geographical locations (Green et al., 2003).
Verdict No 3:
Another study was conducted by Hviid, Stellfeld, Wohlfahrt and Melbye (2003). The main concern of this study was again the Vaccine contained Thimerosal and the incidence and occurrences of Autism. Mercuric compounds are nephrotoxic and neurotoxic at high doses. Thimerosal, a preservative used widely in vaccine formulations, contains ethyl mercury. Thus it has been suggested that childhood vaccination with thimerosal-containing vaccine could be causally related to neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism (Hviid et al., 2003).
Results and discussion of the Research and Study:
During the study no specific evidences were found between the children vaccinated with thimerosal containing vaccines and the children vaccinated without thimerosal containing vaccines. However, the researchers are still dubious about his research as thimerosal is a compound containing ethyl mercury (Hviid et al., 2003)
I would suggest you guys to read in detail about the study done in Danish about the thimerosal vaccines. Trust me it is very interesting!!

There are various controversies about the cause of the autism and thimerosal containing vaccines. I was recently surfing the internet about “eating fish daily”. I came across various inputs by Medpage Today and Medscape about eating fish daily and educating ourselves about the increase in the mercury content. Through what I have read I will say that increase in the mercury content above normal is hazardous for health. Comparing this idea with the vaccine containing thimerosal (mercury containing compounds) I would say there must be some relationship between its side-effect on children and the cause of autism. Keep reading further fore more evidences on Thimerosal containing vaccines and autism.
Verdict No 4:
Parker, Schwartz, Todd and Pickering (2004), conducted another research to find the relationship between Thimerosal containing vaccines and the prevalence of Autism.
I did held my hopes high for this study to prove a positive relationship between the Thimerosal containing vaccine and its relationship between Autism. However, the cohort study performed shows no relationship whatsoever.
I would suggest reading about this study in more detail. Here is the link: http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/114/3/793.long.
Verdict No 5, 6 & 7:
Below are the links that are really interesting to read. Some of the research studies that proved the relationship between the MMR Vaccines and its effects causing Autism was stated as fraud and disputes were reported about the same. Below Verdict No 5 is one of the studies that were able to prove the cause of Autism due to MMR Vaccines, however, due to the dispute the study was considered as discreet. Here is the link http://www.nature.com/news/2011/111109/full/479157a.html
There might be hidden gems behind the dispute. Let’s name one of the biggest gems behind the dispute which might be Loss in Pharmaceutical business. I am not saying that the dispute might be wrong or right. I am just contributing my thoughts on it. Lots of studies were able to prove the relationship between vaccinations and autism. Of course the studies were geographical in nature, however, one cannot avoid that the geographical evidence did prove that vaccinations cause the increase occurrence of ASD in children. But the studies were rejected or considered to be inconsistent as they were unable to prove on the other geographical locations.
Verdict no 6 & 7:
Verdict No 6 & 7 shows the anticipation of UK parents and a famous publication in Australia expressing the fear about the MMR vaccines and ASD. I would definitely suggest reading it in depth. Here are the links
Conclusion: None of the study could prove the final relationship; however, lots of study did prove the prevalence of ASD and Vaccinations.
Let’s Discuss: What are your views based on the studies? Do you suggest that geographical based study should be considered to prove the prevalence of ASD and Vaccinations? Do you think that too many vaccinations can be dangerous?
